Piece Numbers

Why can't you just pre-assign a block of piece numbers to a given artist? Adam Ant gets 100 - 125, Arthur Ant gets 126 - 150, and so on. If an artist really needs more numbers than the default, just grab another block after the last one assigned. Numbers are free. In a medium to large show, 1000 artists with 25 pieces each, you have 25000 numbers issued. Each piece has a unique identifier. Each artist numbers their own piece, then tells registrations what numbers they used, what ones they did not, and the price, description, etc. of each. At check-out time, those numbers are used to issue payment or reclaimed art to the artist.

One thing though - checksums. For any numbering scheme (not just this one), how do you verify that some transposition error or false number didn't creep into the system? If piece 112344 went for $78.00, and piece 113244 went for $780.00, it is in everyone's interest to keep things straight. --ConRunnerAdmin 16:08, 1 August 2007 (PDT)
