Why are all the suggestions for food here junk food?

I'm trying to turn over a new leaf for a con I am going to be running consuite at. Although we'll have leftover junk from other years, I'm trying to provide healthy options which are also environmentally sensitive and socially aware (i.e. much Mars brand chocolate is produced with slave labor, fair trade makes a difference, etc.).

This doesn't seem to be a priority at many cons.

They aren't. They are increasing degrees of food preparation complexity, which roughly corresponds to the perceived quality of the food. Junk Food, besides being a perjorative term, is also somewhat elastic. Why is a given food "Junk" ? Just because you don't like it, because it has no actual nutritive value, because it can be served with little preparation, because you can get better if you ate in a restaurant or brought it in from home?
I suppose some Consuite mavens may care about externalities to the Con when it comes to purchasing food. But none have ever mentioned it to me, and it has never been an obvious concern in any service I've been at. Maybe they will speak up. --Bill Taylor 16:46, 18 November 2007 (PST)
