Security is about ensuring the members and staff of a convention remain safe and healthy before, during, and after it. It is a risk management measure that protects the convention from excessive legal and financial liability, while simultaneously protecting the members and staff from activities that might harm them.
Some people may think of this as more a Community Service function, since it is not about law enforcement so much as guiding members and staff towards less hazardous ways of enjoying the convention.
